In and around Falkirk

The Kelpies

Set within a recreational green space just off the M9 near Airth, sits the world’s largest equine sculptures, The Kelpies. These majestic monuments each weigh 300 tonnes, stand over 30 meters high and make use of 1200 tonnes of steel-reinforced concrete in their foundations. The Kelpies name reflects the mythological transforming creatures that were said to possess the strength and endurance of 100 horses. Guided walking tours take visitors through the evolution of these sculptures – recalling the stories of real life working horses of the area, the local history and the vision of their sculptor Andy Scott.

The Falkirk Wheel

The world’s first and only rotating boatlift. This extraordinary bridge connects the Forth and Clyde canals. The Falkirk Wheel is a functional structure, which lifts and lowers boats as well as roughly 300 tonnes of water! Visitors can try it out for themselves on a tour. Truly one that needs to be seen to be believed.

Linlithgow Palace

Birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, home to the Stewart Kings for over two centuries and now home to lush greenery and a loch filled with wildlife making it a SSSI (Sit of Special Interest). Walk the ruins and gain insight into the magnificent history of the region, admire the impressive architecture as well as the wonderful wildlife and nature scenery.
