Rothes

Rothes

This traditional little town is ideally placed in the Highlands, on the North Eastern coast of Scotland in Moray, on the banks of the River Spey not far from the quaint town of Elgin. The town features a backdrop of the dramatic and beautiful mountains of Morayshire, which are ideal for exploring either by foot or bike. The scenic coastline is a short drive away and is another location ideal for those who wish to do some exploring. There are wonderful seascapes to admire, as well as the chance to spot the pod of resident dolphins swimming in the Moray Firth. The area is also right on the famous Malt Whisky Trail and features easy access to a number of famous, traditional and independent distilleries.

We love Rothes because...

  • Dramatic mountain backdrop
  • Ideal for outdoor lovers
  • On The Whisky Trail

In and around Rothes

Glen Grant Whisky Distillery and Garden

This traditional and historic distillery has opened its doors to visitors – who can step inside, on a journey through time, experiencing how single malt Scotch whisky is crafted, from grain, to bottle. Admire the giant copper stills and learn about the quality ingredients incorporated in the final product, hear about the angel’s share being taken as the barrels age and taste the final product at the bar after your tour.

Duffus Castle

The ancestral home of the Moray family, this grand medieval stronghold is one of the only motte and bailey castles in the United Kingdom. These wooden fortifications usually consisted of a keep, with an enclosed courtyard or ‘bailey’, with a final defence of a ditch and palisade fence circling this. Duffus Castle served its purpose for over 500 years, into the 1700’s. Work began anew in the 1300, building the stone castle that can be seen today. By 1705, unfortunately the castle was abandoned and fell into ruin, although it remains impressive sight.

Glen Moray Distillery

Experts in the art of distillery, this award-winning single malt has been distilled on the banks of the sparkling River Lossie since 1897. Even today, the whisky is distilled by hand in a steady fashion, never rushed and always in balance. The traditions and learnings of their ancestors are not forgotten, which shines through in the complex whisky produced. A unique feature of the tours at Glen Moray Distillery is that the tours are conducted by the distillery workers themselves – who better to explain the inner workings of the process than the passionate staff who know the distillery like the back of their hand?
