Fort William

The largest town in the Highlands and the ‘Outdoor Capital of the UK’, Fort William is a fantastic location to visit with rampant hill walking, climbing, hiking and cycling opportunities around the surrounding, majestic countryside. The town sits under the hulking shadow of the highest mountain in Britain, the great Ben Nevis. With the nearby Glen Nevis as your back garden and the nearby Loch Linnhe and Loch Eil on your doorstep, this is one attractive location. No trip to the Highlands would be complete without a stop in Fort William, whether you’re visiting for a short break or a longer affair.

Visitors should check out the informative West Highland Museum, the glorious St Andrew’s Church as well as the town’s namesake, named the ‘Old Fort’, which has a storied yet mournful history, which includes housing two garrisons of soldiers who took part in the Glencoe massacre under Captain Robert Campbell. Today, visitors can walk the ruins of the fort and admire the many visible remaining features such as the sally port. The outdoor nature of the town and its inhabitant is reflected in the sheer number of events either starting, finishing or going through the town, which includes the West Highland Way and the Great Glen Way.

We love Fort William because...

  • ‘Outdoor Capital of UK’
  • Ideal for whisky
  • Interesting history
